Setting up your system

Print
Spending a little time setting up the Home Theatre System properly is time well invested. A well-installed Home Theatre System will improve your experience many times compared to a non-ideal set-up. The ideal placement of your front, centre and surround speakers is illustrated in figure 1.

• The distance between the two front speakers, left and right, and their distance to your ears should be approximately the same. This is illustrated with an λ in the room illustration.

• The ideal surround speaker placement is slightly behind you, one on each side, with speakers facing your ears for optimum placement.

• The centre speaker should be placed close to your TV screen, slightly above or below it and half way between the two front speakers.
In many normal living rooms the ideal placement of the speakers is not possible and some compromises are necessary. In order to get the best possible sound stage, follow the following guidelines:

• Keep the distance from your ears to each of the two main speakers, left and right, the same and not smaller than 2 meters/6 feet.

• Keep the distance from your ears to each of the two surround speakers the same. Also, the surround speakers should be placed at the same height.

• Keep the centre speaker half way between the two main speakers.

• Keep the path from your ears to the speakers free from furniture, plants, curtains etc.

• Avoid placing the speakers in corners or close to the walls as this will raise the bass to undesirable levels and reduce the perceived sound field.
